OCD and Scrupulosity Therapy
If you have depression or anxiety you can try almost any kind of therapy and it will help. If you have OCD, you need something more. Learning to change your thinking and deep breathing will help but it will not be enough. I've received training in several OCD centered therapies to help you find real healing.
EMDR, IFS, and ERP for Utah & Idaho Residents with Religious OCD / Scrupulosity
Exposure and Response Prevention therapy (ERP) is considered the gold standard for OCD treatment. This type of therapy will focus on identifying your compulsions and interrupting them to then weaken the obsession. The idea of having to face our OCD and scrupulosity based fears sounds scary but I promise I won’t push you beyond what you’re ready for. We’ll move slowly and do it together. You might be uncomfortable at times, but I will not let you do it alone.
I also utilize eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR). While EMDR was created as a trauma treatment it’s been shown to be just as effective for OCD as ERP is. It can target obsessions at their root and help with the way your life experiences have fed your OCD. It will make it much easier to go through ERP exposures and reduce feelings of guilt and dread overall. It will help you feel different, not just tolerate the feelings. I also offer EMDR treatment for trauma.
I also use an approach called internal family systems (IFS) that focuses on the guilty part of yourself. Scrupulosity is often called religious OCD but it’s more accurately guilt OCD. This approach will help find the source of your guilt, explore its function, and make peace with it. In short, it will help you stop feeling so guilty all the time.
I know that your religious concerns and feelings of guilt are heavy and serious. I recognize that even considering therapy for scrupulosity can bring on feelings of guilt and fears of being “blasphemous.” I promise I will help you navigate your complicated relationship with morality and worship. Most often, my clients tell me they wish they had started this work years ago
